- 2023 SKKU Teaching Award Winner Interview_Professor Oh Jong-min
-
Q1. Hello. Professor, congratulations on being selected for the 2023 SKKU Teaching Award. Please share your thoughts. Hello, thank you for your congratulations. It has been four years since I took up my position at Sungkyunkwan University. There have been many difficulties in the meantime, such as conducting fully online classes due to COVID-19, but I think I have come this far safely thanks to the support of the school, the help of fellow professors, and the cooperation of students. Recently, I have been reflecting on what I can do to improve my teaching, and while I am very honored to receive the SKKU Teaching Award, I also feel a great sense of responsibility. In the future, I will put more thought and effort into providing greater inspiration and resonance to students beyond simply conveying knowledge. Thank you. Q2. I'm curious about the ongoing research. Or please introduce the areas you are interested in. I have mainly conducted research on corporate finance, and my main area of interest is the relationship between corporate value and investment in various intangible assets of companies, such as ESG, technological innovation, and corporate culture. I am currently working hard to discover interesting research topics such as the relationship between ESG and the global supply chain. Q3. What is the secret to winning the 2023 SKKU Teaching Award this time? Rather than having a special secret, I think the fact that I tried to communicate smoothly with students worked well. For example, my policy of responding to student e-mail inquiries within 24 hours has been followed with almost no exceptions. I have been continuously conducting face-to-face consultations and counseling through Zoom when requested. It seems that students feel secure just by the fact that the channel of communication with the professor is always open. I think this had the effect of increasing overall satisfaction with the class. Q4. Was there an episode that impressed you the most during your professor’s class? I conducted a kind of experiment because I wanted to conduct a new type of class for first graders. It was about information asymmetry, and students were asked to auction items that were packaged invisibly. I was worried about what would happen if participation was low, but the bid price rose faster than I expected and quickly rose to a higher price than I expected. In the end, wireless headphones worth 180,000 won in the box were sold at a higher price than I expected, so I remember being a little embarrassed. In the second auction, which was held after the identity of the first item was revealed, there were a lot of bubbles as intended, and a 3,500 won note was sold for a whopping 500,000 won (both people received the product as a gift without paying any money). I think the concept was communicated effectively and the students responded well, so I hope to create more unique learning opportunities in the future. Q5. What are your future research plans? As I mentioned earlier, I have focused on researching the impact of investment in intangible assets such as corporate social responsibility, ESG, innovative technology and its intellectual property rights, and corporate culture on corporate value. In the 21st century, the proportion of intangible assets rather than tangible assets in a company's total assets is gradually increasing worldwide, and this trend is expected to intensify in the future. Therefore, it was judged that research on investment in intangible assets of companies and changes in corporate value accordingly is important, and I will continue to research related fields. Q6. Lastly, please give a word to business school students. I think I was able to receive the prestigious Teaching Award thanks to the students who worked hard and created good classes together. I am also carefully reading each and every honest and witty course evaluation feedback. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the students. In addition to academic studies, our students are very busy studying for certifications and preparing for employment. In the meantime, I hope that they will not miss out on the various experiences that can only be enjoyed within the walls of the university. Thank you -

- SKKU Teaching Award_Interview with Professor Kim Yong-seok
- The SKKU Teaching Award system is an honorable award that selects and rewards teachers and instructors who have led the way in improving the quality of education at our university. Since its first implementation in 2011, a total of 93 people have been selected until last year, and it provides pride and recognition to teachers and instructors with outstanding teaching capabilities. The purpose is to provide honor and promote and spread motivation to provide quality education. We listened to the story of Professor Kim Yong-seok(majoring in management information), the winner of the 2023 SKKU Teaching Award. Q1. Hello. Professor, congratulations on being selected for the 2023 SKKU Teaching Award. Please share your thoughts. I am pleased to present such an honorable award. I am also humbled by the fact that there are many fellow professors who teach students with respect and passion. I think of this award as an encouragement to teach students better in the future, and I will think more and work hard to provide good lectures. thank you Q2. What is the secret to winning the 2023 SKKU Teaching Award this time? It is difficult for me to say for sure what the secret is. What students often mention is that I teach with passion and that I use a lot of real-life examples to explain things in an easy-to-understand manner. I had a chance to see the reasons for selection when awarding an award. It appears that several factors were taken into consideration, including course evaluation scores, efforts to improve the curriculum (education committee activities and participation in the Education Development Center workshop, etc.), and contributions to expanding global education in business schools (providing international language classes and actively accepting exchange students). This is an activity that everyone is doing, and I think I was lucky. Q3. Was there an episode that impressed you the most during your class? About half of the students taking my classes are exchange students, so their nationalities are diverse. I conduct a variety of group activities so that Sungkyunkwan University students have the opportunity to collaborate with students from various countries. On the day of the first group activity, which was full of awkwardness, we asked students to bring a snack to introduce their country to as an icebreaker, and the students loved it. I was happy to see them all smiling and becoming friends so quickly. Q4. I am curious about what research is currently underway and what research will be conducted in the future. Among the research currently in progress, I would like to mention research related to crowdfunding. Crowdfunding refers to the act of an entrepreneur with a business item introducing his or her project through an Internet platform and raising business funds from a large number of small investors. Much research is being conducted to understand investor decision-making and the success of crowdfunding campaigns in attracting investment. The research I am conducting is about how the investment decisions of 1) celebrities with many followers on social networks and 2) experts with a lot of relevant investment experience influence the decisions of other investors, and how this impact varies depending on the degree of difficulty in evaluating the quality of business items (experience goods vs. exploration goods). We collected and analyzed a large amount of data from Wadiz, a Korean crowdfunding platform, and are currently finalizing our thesis. Additionally, we have begun research examining the impact of generative artificial intelligence on team collaboration. Within a company, TFTs or project teams are often formed for business planning, product development, problem solving, etc. At this time, the dominant research results are that teams made up of members with diverse backgrounds and perspectives tend to generate more creative and innovative ideas, but also have difficulty coordinating and integrating opinions. These days, companies are very interested in whether the use of generative artificial intelligence will lead to increased work productivity. Therefore, when generative artificial intelligence is introduced into team work, we would like to investigate through experiments the pros and cons of team diversity and how they interact, and present theoretical and practical implications. Q5. Lastly, please give a word to business school students. Many professors often worry and share opinions about how to provide better lectures. There is a saying that YouTubers always say: “Your ‘subscriptions’ and ‘likes’ are a great help in video production.” Likewise, students' interest and affection for their subjects is a great help to instructors and motivates them to prepare better lectures. No matter what course you take, we ask for your active class participation and interest!

[New faculty special] ‘Education that helps people to ask good questions is important’
-
Our business school is strengthening its educational and research capabilities, which are its core values, and is striving to cultivate talent for student success and future value creation. To this end, new faculty with outstanding capabilities were invited in the second semester of the 2023 school year. This time, we met Professor Park Tae-yoon of
, a new faculty member who has joined the College of Business Administration family, and heard about his ‘major research activities, major, and future plans’. Q1. Hello, professor, it's nice to meet you like this! Please introduce yourself. Hello. My name is ParkTae-yoon, a professor majoring in management who has been newly appointed since last August. Nice to meet you. I returned to Korea after working as a professor at Vanderbilt University, Owen Graduate School of Management for 7 years and at Cornell University, Department of Human Resources Studies for 4 years. I didn't think so either, but I worked as a professor in the U.S. for 11 years. I am very excited and happy to come to my home country and see the students on campus. In particular, Sungkyunkwan University's business school has recently grown significantly to the point where it is noticeable overseas, and I am glad that I can be a part of that growth story. Q2. Please briefly introduce your major and what made you choose it? I am researching ways for organizations and employees to thrive together. Specifically, we are looking at how organizations can define the way they establish relationships with employees, and which types of organization-employee relationships will be more effective and in what environments. In relation to this, a lot of research has been done on the design of organizational systems, especially turnover systems, compensation systems, and parental leave systems. In the past, when I decided to go to business school as an undergraduate, I went because I heard it would help me get a job, but then the IMF financial crisis occurred, so-called popular workplaces closed down, and everyone was confused about work and life. , it made me think again about what it means to be good at getting a job. I had been thinking about finding something meaningful to do within business administration, but I found it interesting to discuss how the management field balances the interests of organizations and employees, so I studied and soon became a producer and transmitter of related knowledge. Q3. Please tell us how you feel about starting anew at Sungkyunkwan University's business school and your future plans. I've just been in office, but seeing students teaming, discussing, and presenting all over campus gives me a lot of energy. In the future, I would like to help students both inside and outside the classroom so that they can have a meaningful college experience. In this regard, if there is a student who is interested in research and teaching, I would like to actively support them, help them study abroad, and foster future students. Additionally, there are many professors in our business school who are good at research and teaching, so I would like to learn a lot and collaborate through conversations with them. Q4. Please briefly introduce your class. Currently, I am teaching research methodology in master's and doctoral courses, and next year I plan to lecture on personnel management or human resource management. In order for an organization to be managed effectively, activities such as establishing strategies and goals and introducing new technologies are important, but in order for all such activities to be carried out and operated effectively, it ultimately depends on what mindset and attitude the people working within the organization have when working. It may be important, but there is a tendency to dismiss these aspects of practice and operation as the realm of art, not science. In my lecture, I plan to make time to discuss human resource management cases and look at related scientific evidence. Q5. What are your future research plans? We plan to continue researching the relationship between organizations and employees and related management systems. So far, I have done a lot of research on overseas cases and data in the United States, but now I am thinking of discussing it more closely with Korean company officials and, if possible, conducting practical research to change actual organizations. Q6. Please tell us what you think is the ideal educator. I think education that helps you ask good questions is important. Although it is important to search for good answers, there is pleasure in asking good questions and creating opportunities for other people to have fun conversations and think together. To ask such good questions, you need to do a lot of research and think about it yourself. Therefore, I think it is an important role in university education to train students to think in that way and create opportunities for such questions and discussions. Q7. Please tell me if you have anything you want to say to the students who are studying hard at Sungkyunkwan University's business school! Don't be too impatient. It is necessary and important to think hard about everything and work with passion, but I don't want you to think that such efforts will necessarily bring rewards in the direction you think. Efforts can bring rewards in unexpected ways. And try lots of fun things! -
