- Conducted the 2022 Business Administration Global Challenge (Germany) & interviewed Kang Tae-woo (Business 21) student
-
The College of Business visited Germany for 10 days from November 3 to 14 as a global challenge to the Department of Business Administration in 2022. It was conducted to provide opportunities for business students with insufficient global experience to participate in global seminars, expand their horizons, and pave the way for growth as global leaders. The visiting country is Berlin, Germany, and participated in the International Week on Sustainability program hosted by the Berlin School of Economics and Law(BSEL). A total of 10 students were selected in consideration of interest and passion for document screening and ESG fields, the expected effect of the tour, self-introduction, initiative, and sincerity. They participated in sustainability week with 10 selected students for 10 days and conducted more than 6 hours of classes every day. They were able to develop a global perspective and broaden their knowledge on political, ethical, and data statistical approaches to sustainability and related keywords such as circular economy, SDGs, and CSR. Lee Seon-min, a student who participated in this Global Challenge, said, “The best part of taking various classes is not simply sitting and taking lectures, but it is a participation format where you have to create a result by forming a group with students of various nationalities participating in the conference. It was good,” he said. In addition, student Kwak Hyeon-soo said, "It was a time for me to grow myself by encountering and experiencing many new things as well as ESG and Sustainability in Germany, the main axis of the EU."
1. Hello, please introduce yourself first. Hello. My name is Kang Tae-woo, and I entered Sungkyunkwan University as a 21st year student. 2. What motivated you to participate in the 2022 Business Administration Global Challenge (Germany)? The reason why I participated in the 2022 Business Administration Global Challenge (Germany) came from a simple desire for a country called Europe that I usually had. It seems that learning something from a continent I have never been to, Europe, rather than learning something only in Korea, is so attractive that I participated. 3. What activities did you do there? Also, what is the most memorable? Activities in Berlin were largely divided into two parts. Life at school and life outside school were divided into two. Life at school was on average from 8:00 to 4:30, except for an hour for lunch, I took classes all the time. However, this class was not a simple one-way class, but an interactive class where the professor and students communicated, and most of the classes were conducted as team projects. Teaming up with new classmates every day, I mainly engaged in discussions and presentations on climate issues and sustainability, conversing in full English with students from various countries such as Spain, England, the United States, Slovakia, and the Netherlands. At this time, the most memorable thing was that I teamed up with other people, presented the SDGs results discussed with the team members in English in front of all class members for about 3 minutes, and had a Q&A session. In addition, I had time to see and feel the culture of Germany's famous cultural tourist attractions, such as the Berlin Wall and the Berlin Dom. The most memorable place in the process of touring Berlin like this seems to be the rooftop of the Berlin Dom. 4. What did you learn from this global challenge? Through the Global Challenge, I learned sustainability knowledge such as ESG managements and SDGs, and I think I learned how to speak English as much as Korean for most of the day for about 10 days without being nervous when talking to people from other countries speak English. 5. What are your future plans? From a short-term perspective, my future plan is to enlist in the military in January of 2023 and prepare for internships and exchange students to Europe in 2025 when I am discharged in 24. And from the second half of 2025, I think I will start preparing for a startup, which has been my long-time goal. -

- Interview with Song Eun-young (GBA, class of 10), alumnus, regarding her appointment as a professor at City University
- Song Eun-young, a 10th class of Global Business Administration at our university, is currently teaching at City University of Hong Kong with a major in Marketing Consumer Psychology. She says it is important to choose a role model, because it helps me to specify when and how I should do it, and it gives me confidence that I can do it because he did it. Hear more details through interviews. 1. Hello, nice to meet you. Please introduce yourself and the field you are currently researching! Hello, nice to meet you. I am studying marketing, especially Consumer Behavior. I'm mainly researching how new technologies, especially smartphones and algorithms, affect people's consumption decisions. 2. I heard that you are a professor of marketing at City Univ. of Hong Kong. I'm curious about the process of getting hired. Please explain why you applied. The most important thing for me was the environment where I could do my research freely. The university in Hong Kong are all public, so the government's funding for research is very abundant, and there are many environments that give consideration to focus on research. Also, I came to Hong Kong because it is geographically close to Korea, so I was fascinated by the fact that I can travel with my family and friends more often. The process of getting hired is long and complicated, but to sum it up, by the end of my Ph.D., I'm going to participate in a big conference event called 'job market' and pass it after two interviews. Is it similar to the process of corporate public recruitment? More specifically, when the 'job market' opens, you apply to schools by creating a package of papers you're working on and what kind of researcher you're going to be, just like you're applying to a company. After that, the selected successful candidates will have the first round of interviews, and the first round will be mainly one-to-many interviews, which will briefly introduce themselves and research topics for 20 to 30 minutes. After that, the selected successful candidates will conduct the second interview. During the second interview, usually visit the school for about 2 nights and 3 days, but I replaced it with zoom due to COVID-19. I have one-on-one interviews with professors at the school for a day or two, present my thesis for an hour and a half to two hours, and meet with the dean, the head of the school's administrative posts related to the recruitment of professors. If you visit the school in person, on the evening after the schedule, you attend a party and have closer and personal time with the department professors. After that, the school finally decides the successful candidates through meetings and votes. 3. Until recently, there must have been a lot of disruptions in lectures due to COVID-19. How did you overcome it in Hong Kong? I did the all the classes online, but I think students must have had a harder time than I did. My class is called Business Case Analysis and Communication, so 'communication' is a must, but it was not easy for students to participate freely online. In order to overcome the limitations, I made a lot of efforts, and I often had small zoom meetings with student outside of class, and I tried to receive continuous feedback and reflect it. 4. What are some of the most memorable activities you participated in during your undergraduate days? In fact, during my undergraduate years, I didn't get very good grades or participate in extracurricular activities. I wasn't faithful to my studies or school life, and I was very interested in fashion, so I was busy doing various activities in that field. However, the marketing class I took in the first semester of the fourth grade was a good experience. Luckily, I was able to gain research experience as a research assistant(RA) when I was an undergraduate, so I was able to take a Ph.D. program right away without doing a master's degree. At that time, I realized how fun and happy research was while doing RA and dreamed of a career as a professor. 5. If you have any research results published by the conference or papers published in famous journals, please introduce them together. Most recently, our top journal, the Journal of Marketing Research, published a paper titled Phone and Self: How Smartphone Use Increases the Preference for Uniqueness. The paper found that when consumers use smartphones, they make choices that show their individually compared to when they use ordinary computers. 6. Please tell me about your future research plan. I plan to study how the use of smartphones affects people's behavior. We're studying not only consumer behavior, but also how smartphones affect people's social relationships and cognitive abilities. 7. If you have a chance to visit your alma mater, where do you want to go the most? What's the reason. Actually, I visited Sungkyunkwan University for the first time in a long time this early summer, but all the stores I liked and went to often disappeared...(Crying) I liked a really small coffee-take-out restaurant called 'Holic' in front of the main gate and a cafe that used to bake and sell delicious cakes called 'Ramblas', but both of them seemed to have gone bankrupt. It was such a bummer. If I may recommend a place that still exists... Um... Waffle at the faculty hall? I remember going to eat waffles after lunch. 8. Lastly, please tell me what you want to say or give advice to your juniors at Sungkyunkwan University's business school. (feat. Business school students preparing for employment abroad) I think role models are important. A role model helps me shape when, what, and how, and gives me confidence that I can do it because he's done it. And if I follow my role model, I think I can achieve a virtuous cycle of becoming someone's role model someday. I sincerely support you to find your own role model and become someone else's role model.

- 2022 2nd Semester "Job Hak-Da-Sik (Career Mentoring)" held
-
Following the career concert held on October 5,
was conducted to help freshman and enrolled students with their careers. A total of 86 people, including 17 seniors and 69 business students, participated in the event to expand the senior and junior network to the suburbs and strengthen the business administration department brand of Sungkyunkwan University. From October 12th to 31st, the senior graduates voluntarily met offline within the schedule, and the working institutions are Kakao, Samsung C&T, Google, Hyosung Advanced Materials, Samil Accounting Corporation, Korea P&G, NICE Evaluation Information, AWS, Samsung Electronics, and Riot Games. A business administration students submitted an application for career mentoring in advance to match the senior, and provided 20,000 won per team member, including the senior. After meeting offline, an activity report was submitted, and an award ceremony was held by selecting an excellent team. Student Seo Sang-hwa of the team, who was jointly selected for first place in the , said, “I thought that there is a really big difference between a college student and a member of society, so I had a lot of worries about whether I had to prepare and what kind of concerns I had to worry about, but after meeting with the seniors, those worries were a little relieved.” Cha Ye-ju, a student from the team, who was also selected as the joint 1st place, said, “I was very worried because it was difficult to obtain substantial information about CPA, but through this good opportunity, I was able to meet CPA seniors and hear many more stories. It was an honor to be able to It is almost impossible to meet seniors at work as a student, but it seems like I learned a lot through a good opportunity, so I was really grateful to the seniors for taking the time.” A graduate from Woo Joo-sung, who participated in this event, said, “I felt proud of solving the various questions of my juniors, and I also learned a lot from the way they enthusiastically participated and asked questions despite being in the lower grades. In the future, I hope that many seniors and juniors will participate in the job study program and share a positive influence with each other,” he said, giving advice as a senior. 1. Team leader Seo Sang-hwa's impressions : I thought it was a big difference between challenge students and people, so I was worried about what I should prepare and what I should think about in the future, but after meeting senior, that worry was resolved a little. There was an awkward atmosphere at first, but it was a very fun and meaningful time because senior knew our concerns and told us comfortably. We are currently in the 3rd and 4th grade, and we will enter the job exam within a short time of 1-2 years, so we had a lot of worries and concerns, but senior gave us courage and gave and gave us a lot of good words, which gave us a lot of strength. Before we met senior, we were in a situation where we had a lot of abstract concerns, but after we met senior, we were able to plan what we should think more about, what we should prepare. Also, not as a senior, but as a person, 'Kim Hyung-joon' felt that he was a solid person inside. Even in a short conversation, I got the impression that he is a wonderful person who is proud of his job, has no regrets about his values and what he has done, and has a firm will the future. Of course, I got a lot of information and tips about job hunting, but I was more proud and meaningful because I felt like I was a big motivation for senior's cool appearance. We received a lot of help from our seniors and were influenced by them, so we thought that we also want to become seniors who can motivate our juniors in the future. I think the biggest advantage of 'Business Administration' at Sungkyunkwan University is 'People', so we decided to become seniors who give good influence in the future and seniors who have a great inner side before that. I spent a motivating day, promising to become seniors participating in career concerts and mentoring in the Department of Business Administration within a few years. 2. Team leader Cha Ye-joo's impressions : I have been worried because it has been difficult to obtain substantial information on certified public accountants, so it was an honor to meet and hear a lot of stories from senior certified public accountants through this good opportunity. As a student, it is almost impossible to meet seniors at work, but I feel like I learned a lot through a good opportunity, so I was really grateful to my seniors for taking the time. First of all, I was able to get a lot of information that was actually helpful. When I made a choice in preparing for the exam in the future, I thought I would be able to use a lot of the things I got from this mentoring. In particular, I was able to know what kind of mind I should take the test with through my senior's words on mental management. If you think that it will be impossible to pass the same level even before you start the test, and worry that you have to endure a long time, you are bound to get more tired. Rather than dragging out the exam period with half-heartedness, I decided to my best to finish it quickly and prepare for the exam. I got a lot of realistic advice from my senior about various concerns I would have while preparing for the test. The time I spent with my senior was not long, but I came to think that it was more meaningful and substantial any other lecture. Also, I could know the job of a CPA was to do and what kind of life it could live. It was a really good time to hear vivid stories of the field, such as corporate culture, work-life balance, and characteristics of each job. It was a time to reconsider whether a certified public accountants was a good job for me and whether preparing for an exam would be a good choice in my life. After listening to the senior's story, I became more determined that I want to prepare really hard. Also, I could know what the job of a CPA was to do and what kind of life it could live. This mentoring was a valuable opportunity to enhance understanding of the general public accountant and solidify my career path, and I thought it was a good idea to apply for mentoring. 't forget the help I received from my seniors and thought that if we become certified public accountants someday, I want to return the help I received to my juniors. Senior Woo Joo-sung's impressions : I felt proud by solving various questions from my juniors, and I also learned a lot from the passionate participation and questioning even though they were in the lower grades. I hope many seniors and juniors will participate in the job hak-da-sik program and share positive influences with each other. 3. Team Leader Lee Eun-hwa's impressions : I did mentoring with a senior who is active in the marketing field of a foreign company caleed P&G Sk2 in Korea. Senior was holding the title of section chief at a young age. The secret was to ride the company's "fast track." The working hours are long, but she let me know that I can get a promotion quickly. Also, if I worked in the marketing field of a company, I felt like I had to plan marketing myself and have a lot of imagination. However, my senior said that the marketing department of a company is the role of the decision maker, and it is the outsourcing company that plans direct marketing. Listening to it, I thought that I need to think more about whether I want be a decision maker or a marketing planner in the field of marketing. Listening to the vivid experience of my senior who is working in the field helped me a lot in setting my career. Senior Kim Na-young's impressions : It was refreshing to have a chance to meet students in 2012 and 22 through career mentoring. It was a time where we looked back on our past memories and thought a lot about how to help our juniors. As a result, I will cheer for you to achieve everything you want to do without losing your curiosity and sprit until the end of 'Unusual team'! -

- [Contribution] Professor Park Myeong-seop, International Newspaper_My hometown is Busan!
- Watch Na Hoon-ah's "My Hometown is Busan" and Choi Baek-ho's "If I go to Busan" on YouTube, thinking of Gwangalli and Haeundae with my eyes closed. Looking at the water of Nakdong River from the window on the left side of the train departing for Seoul leaving Busan Station behind in February 2002, I promised to return in August 2022 when I retired but I still live in Seoul. Thanks to the two singers from Busan, I sometimes soothe my hometown's longing with music. Recently, I read an article about Narim Lee Byung-joo's 30th anniversary of death in an international newspaper. It was good news. How many times have I read Narim's novels? The last novel I read was 'Don't Look Back', which I read with a sigh after giggling in my mind more that a decade ago. My thoughts bite my tail. One day in 1982, my graduate school advisor showed me a column of the late Lee Byung-joo's "Unforgettable Person" and said, "Mr. Park! Mail this magazine to your father." He was a graduate of the Tokyo Foreign Language College, where about 10 or so brilliant Koreans entered before liberation, and was fluent in English as well as native Chinese and Japanese. He used to let my father and he drinks by the bowl in Seomyeon, Busan. I thought maybe he also talked about the person who appeared in the column "Unforgettable Person". Both of them had already interacted with the late Park Hee-yeon. The column by Mr. Narim who dropped out of Waseda University's Department of University of Literature, was about my advisor and Park Hee-yeon, a fellow student of Tokyo Foreign Studies in the 1930s. I still remember that my father talked a lot about this high school senior and his family. The column was roughly like this. The writer(Lee Byung-joo), who was a French literature student but dropped out of the class, recalled Park Hee-yeon's excellence(English, French is really outstanding) at Japan's top foreign language education institution and introduced Park Hee-yeon's episode as a student at Busan 2nd Commercial School(later Busan Commercial High School, now Kaesong High School) At that time, the principal's office of Busan 2nd Commercial School was cleaned on student duty, and one day when a Japanese principal came to work, a parrot in the principal's cage muttered, "Bakayaro, Bakayaro!" According to an investigation conducted by the angry principal, it was also said that Park Hee-yeon educated parrots like that. My father is from Busan Commercial High School, and I am from Seomyeon, Busan, where the school was. While reading the column, I was relieved while holding my stomach and laughing. Oh! There was someone like this. Park Hee-yeon was born in Miryang and spent her middle and high school days in Busan, frequently contributed columns such as 'My struggle against cancer' to newspaper in Busan, and served as a professor at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and Inha University. As I majored in international trade at the time, I thought like this. How did he get to Tokyo from Busan? How did my advisor from Wonsan get to Tokyo? By train from Wonsan to Gyeongseong, 1 night in Gyeongseong, by train from Gyeongseong to Busan, 1 night in Busan, by government ferry for 2 days and 1 night, disembarking at Shimonoseki and overnight, train bound for Tokyo from there. I think it will take 4 nights and 5 days door to door. What a combination of sea and land transport! Thoughts bite tail. Another person my father often told me was Park Ok-jul, a former professor of French literature and Seoul National University, from Seomyeon, Busan. I think the person who studied abroad from Dongnae High School at the invitation of the French government in the 1950s was my father's mentor. Years ago, my father came to Seoul to meet him for the last time in his life. That image of my father remain in my mind. There was no French speaker in Busan, so he sometimes told me that the priest of Daegu Cathedral was from France, so he went to Daegu for one night and two days to talk in French. .My father was born in Busan and lived only Busan except for the Korean War and studying in the United States. My father, who was over 90 years old, went to the U.S. as a Fulbright scholarship in the 1960s and taught English at Kyungnam High School, Busan High School, and Busan National University. Writing about three outstanding foreign language literature majors in Busan based on article by Narim Lee Byung-joo, it led to the idea that Busan was also a city that produced people overflowing with global DNA. On October 15, a BTS concert was held in Busan to pray for the hosting of the world fair. That was amazing. I sincerely pray that the 2030 World Expo will be held in Busan thanks to the support and passion of BTS and the wishes of Busan citizens and the people. It's been about a year and a half since I entered graduated school with a interest in data science and FIntech, and I'm very happy that my efforts have paid off. I majored in business administration when I was an undergraduate, and there were many difficulties in studying other fields, but it is rewarding to be able to produce good results. Also, through this competition, I was able to check my aptitude and interest in the field once again. 3. What is the ‘Wells Fargo Campus Analytics Challenge’ hosted by Wells Fargo Bank in the United States? Wells Fargo is one of the four largest commercial banks in the U.S. and hosts machine learning competition for all college and graduate students in the U.S. Each year, it provides new self-data and opportunities for students to experience the role of data scientists in the real financial industry and develop creative models tat solve problem 4. Please explain 'Determine Transaction Categories Using Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing’ that you studied. The theme of the 2022 competition was to develop a model that predicts customer's bank transaction categories based on given bank transaction descriptions using machine learning and natural language processing. Training data is categorized into 10 categories, and each transaction history is about one sentence long and includes information such as data, place, brand, amount, and seller code(MCC). After extracting meaningful features from transaction data using natural language processing, we went through the process of creating a classification model by applying machine learning algorithms based on the selected feature and meta data. Finally, we applied the developed model to classify unlabeled data, and wrote and submitted a report in a short paper format. Traditional text processing and feature extraction methods are not sufficient and suitable for extracting meaningful information because bank transaction data is very short compared to general text. Therefore I believe that finding a new method/combination text processing that matches the nature of the data was the most important factor in this competition. 5. What are your future career and goals? As a Data scientist, I want to develop a digital strategy that can help financial institutions make data-driven decisions and provide high-quality financial services to customers. I also want to contribute to digital transformation of financial institutions and innovation in financial services through this. In the long run, I would like to expand my base as a STEM female leader in the United States. 6. Lastly, please give us some advice for students interested in fintech convergence major. There are many data science graduate schools in Korea, but Sungkyunkwan University's Fintech Convergence Major is the only with a clear domain and multiple degrees with overseas graduate schools. Because you can comprehensively study various disciplines, including finance, statistics, and computer science, everyone like me who is new to science and engineering, or those who are new to finance, can full challenge it. It is also highly recommended that you can consider a career in the United States through multiple degrees, expanding the diversity of opportunities. If you are interested in fintech and have decided on a domain in the financial field, I hope you will challenge it and have an opportunity to successfully change/strengthen your major.
