- Sungkyunkwan University passed 116 certified public accountants, an increase of 11 from last year
- In the 57th CPA examination this year, Korea University produced the mot successful CPA candidates. As a result, Korea University will continue to have the highest number of successful applicants for seven consecutive years. At Seoul National University, 99 people passed this year, which is a double increase from the level of successful applicants produced in the last 10 years. It is analyzed that the number of applicants increased as the working environment and treatment of certified public accountants, known as 'extreme jobs', improved than before. Sungkyunkwan Universtiy increased from 98 in 2020 to 105 in 2021, and produced 116 students this year, making it the second-highest number of successful applicants after Korea University. Yonsei University saw its number of successful applicants rise from 106 in 2020 to 118 last year, but it recorded 106 again this year, giving Sungkyunkwan University a second-place seat. In response, a hing-ranking officials of an accounting firm said, "Since there are various fields of entry such as law schools and MBA, there were relatively few candidates and successful applicants for a while. However , the number of successful applicants seems to have increased as the number of applicants increased again, perhaps because the working environment of the accounting industry and compensation and treatment have improved since the New External Audit Act." From the left, Nam Ki-man, Jeon Kyung-min, Hwang Ji-hoe, and Hong Si-woon Sungkyunkwan University's Graduate School of Business(Dean Ahn Hee-joon) recently announced that four Ph.D. students have been hired as professors at national universities such as Changwon University(Nam Ki-man), Chonbuk National University(Jeon Kyung-min), and Hannam University(Hwang Ji-hoe) and National Tax Officials Training Institute(Accounting Professor)(Hong Si-woon) First of all, Nam Ki-man, who had a master's and doctorate degree in business administration, was appointed as an assistant professor of accounting at Changwon National University in March 2022 and is giving lectures. "I was able to vaguely draw the image of an ideal educator under the guidance of a professor at Sungkyunkwan University" he said. "There are many important virtues to have as a professor, but it is most important to motivate students to have confidence on their own." Jeon Kyung-min, who obtained his doctorate in August 2018, was appointed as an assistant professor of accounting at Chonbuk National University from September this year. He said, "It took a long time to get the final appointment after obtaining a doctorate, but I was able to reap good results with the constant encouragement and guidance of professors majoring in accounting at business schools." Hwang Ji-hoe, who received her doctorate in February 2022, will also be appointed as an assistant professor of accounting at Hannam University from September this year and will teach students from the second semester. "My main job here is to give lectures and write textbooks for new employees(grade 7 and 9) and incumbent employees" he said. "If I have been in charge of undergraduate classes and have conducted theory-oriented classes so far, I will focus on practice in the future and help expand the scope of my research on the relationship between tax and accounting." Lee Jong-eun, an accounting professor at the College of Business, said, "I think the news is the result of their will, the interest of professors, and research cooperation, and the full support of business schools and schools aimed at leading research-oriented universities. I wish the best for our doctoral graduates who are taking their first steps as professors."

- Dr. Jeon Kyung-min (Accounting major), an interview on the appointment of an assistant professor of accounting at Chonbu
- 1. Hello, it's so nice to meet you. Please introduce yourself to the field you are currently studying. Hello, I am Jeon Kyung-min who received my Ph.D. in August 2018 under the title ' Investor attention and Earnings management: Analysis using Google search volume index(Advisor : Choi Young-soo)' and was appointed as an assistant professor of accounting at Chonbuk National University in September 2022. Currently, I am mainly studying corporate governance, ESG, and accounting transparency. 2. I'm curious about the process of becoming a professor at Chonbuk National Unieversity. Please explain the reason and process for applying. During the PhD program, I published four papers in domestic journals, and after I obtained my PhD, I published one SSCI, five Scopus, and eight domestic journals. Also, I gave lectures on various accounting-related subjects such as accounting principles, management accounting, intermediate accounting and corporate tax laws at Sungkyunkwan University, Dankook University, Dougduk Women's University, and Ewha Women's University. I took a long time from the acquisition of a doctorate to the final appointment, but I think I was able to reap good results with the constant encouragement and guidance of professors majoring in accounting at the business school. 3. If you have any research results or papers published in prestigious journals, please introduce them together. During my Ph.D. program, I participated in international conferences in Tokyo(INTERNATIONAL GRADUATE SCHOOL OF ACCOUNTING POLICY), and in Hawaii(Asian-Pacific Conference on International Accounting Issues) to present my thesis, and I also published a paper called 'Female directors on the board and investment efficiency' in the Asian Business Management(SSCI) journal with my PhD colleagues. 4. Please tell me about your future research plan. In response to the request of the times to become more mature in capitalism and corporate culture in the second half of the 20th century, interest in corporate social responsibility CSR and ESG is increasing as one of the important trends in business administration. Among CSR theorists, Archie Carroll presented a four-step model: economic responsibility, legal responsibility, ethical responsibility, and philanthropic responsibility. The reason for the existence of companies is that they should no longer focus on profit-seeking, but on social development. Why do corporate social responsibility activities become an important issue recently, and how do capital markets perceive and respond to these corporate activities? I would like to conduct a study on CSR and ESG of corporate social responsibility. We would like to conduct a study on the corporate governance structure, specifically the composition and characteristics of the board of directors and management due to the recent increase in interest in the use of experienced human resources in various fields and the legislation of the female executive quota system. 5. Tell us about your educator. I think that student guidance in college helps students learn on their own initiative and also acts as advisors and counselors in career decisions. A long time ago, I heard from a professor that these days, "There are many teachers, but there are few true teachers". Beyond simply teaching academic knowledge, I think it is a good teacher to teach and guide properly as a senior in life. I want to be a professor who sets and example for students first, encourage students to learn and study voluntarily and willingly, and basically listens to students's voice first. 6. Lastly, please give advice to Sungkyunkwan University students and master's and doctorate students preparing for the professor. The advice I would like to give to my juniors at Sungkyunkwan University is to sincerely follow the instructions of the professors first. Professors are more concerned about your career path than you think. I also felt that professors were only difficult during the master's and doctorate courses, but as the time of difficulties accumulated, I think I was able to reach the level where I could be hired. Also, please talk a lot with your colleagues. Rather than conducting one study alone, if you conduct several studies with your colleagues, you have a chance to make up for each other's shortcomings and grow together. Challenging may not always result in good results, but even if you encounter failure, it is a good experience for the future and I think it is also important to get it tin the process. Please don't give up until the end. I hope all of you will have good results.

[New Professor Special] 'Make hay while the sun shines' Take advantage of this opportunity
-
Our college of Business is strengthening its core values of education and research, and is striving to nurture talents for student success and future value creation. To this end, new teacher was appointed in the second semester of the 2022 school year, her major was accounting, and she was invited to be teacher with excellent competence in each field. This time, we met Professor 'Choi Ah-reum' of
, a new teacher who became a family member of business school, and listened to 'major research activities, majors, and future plans' Q1. Hello, professor. Nice to meet you like this! Please introduce yourself. Hello, I am Choi Ah-reum, who was appointed as an accounting major in the Department of Global Business Administration at Sungkyunkwan University in the second semester of 2022. I worked at Hong Kong Baptist University for 6 years after I received my Ph.D. in Accounting(Accounting Audit) major and came to Sungkyunkwan University this semseter. It's nice to meet you all. Q2. Please briefly introduce your major, and what made you choose your major? I majored in accounting within business administration. Companies disclose their financial status and financial performance through the form of financial statements and communicate with various stakeholders based on them, and related subjects are accounting. I had the opportunity to take classes in various major subjects when I was undergraduate, and there was a class that changed my stereotype that I thought accounting was a rather boring and technical subject. It was a class on financial statements analysis and corporate value evaluation. In this class, I learned to understand and evaluate companies through financial statements, and I continued to study accounting because I was interested in it. Unfortunately, I often read articles that accounting jobs may be replaced by AI in the future. However, I think this is a judgement based on only looking at a part of the accounting. The simple, repetitive task that occur in the process of preparing financial statements can be replaced to some extent. However, since accounting includes both interpreting financial statements and making strategic interpretations and judgments based on them, I think human roles in accounting area will still be important eve with the advent of the AI era. Q3. Please tell us how you feel about starting anew at Sungkyunkwan Universtiy's Business School and your future plans. First of all, I am very happy to have a new start at Sungkyunkwan University. It's only been a week since I went to school, but I'm building good memories every day. In the meantime, it has been difficult to interact with people due to COIVD-19, but I want to communicate with people a lot in the future as COVID-10 is more eased. Q4. Please briefly introduce your class. This semester, I was in charge of a seminar on accounting principles for undergraduate classes and audit for graduate classes. Accounting principles are the most basic subject of accounting, and we plan to deal with how to prepare financial statements and interpret them. As I did my first undergraduate class, I was able to meet students of various nationalities, so I hope it will be a more interesting class. Graduate school class is a class where you read and discuss papers related to audit. Are large accounting firms better? What efforts can regulators make to improve audit quality? What changes will the new external audit law, which was recently introduced in Korea, bring about? How does AI change the role of auditors? We are going to cover a variety of topics such as that. Q5. What is your future research plan? There are various research fields within accounting, and I have mainly done research related to audit. The auditor's role is to verify that the financial statements prepared by the company are well prepared according to accounting standards. I am researching whether the auditor's original role is doing well, in which circumstances the auditor's role becomes more important, and what environment the auditor should be supported to play a more important role in the capital market, and I will continue to study this. In addition, we plan to continue to expand our research area by combining corporate social responsibility with accounting, which has recently been emphasized. When talking about a company's performance, it used to focus only on financial performance, but recently it has also emphasized a lot of non-financial performance. Following this trend, many companies are publishing reports on corporate social responsibility, and we plan to study what role auditors can play to improve the quality of the report and what information is useful in this report. Q6. Please tell us about the ideal educator you think. I think it's very difficult to express in one word what an ideal educator is. There are various perspective on ideal educators, but I would like to focus on the fact that my primary teaching audience is university students. When I think about when I was a college student, I think I had a lot of worries about the future. I thought a lot about what I liked or could do well, but I didn't know how to solve these problems. So I want to share with my students that there are more possibilities and opportunities while thinking about the future(I will also emphasize that accounting is important for more possibilities and opportunities). I'm still lacking a lot, but I'll constantly think about the ideal educator. Q7. If you have anything you want to say to students who are studying hard at Sungkyunkwan University's Business School, please tell them! First of all, it's nice to meet you at Sungkyunkwan University. You have to study hard while living in school, but I think it's also important to find various opportunities and experience them yourself if possible. I like the expression 'Make hay while the sun shine'. It means to make it your own when the opportunity comes, but I think you should be well prepared in order to do this. In the future, endless growth possibilities will unfold in front of us, and I hope you have a fruitful university life so that you can prepare well and achieve them. Please feel free to let me know if there is anything I can do help you in the process. -

- Lee Seon-hyeok, a business school, selected for the 中峰 Study Abroad Scholarship at the School of Business (Georgia I
- Our university selects 中峰 Study Abroad Scholarship Students with desirable character and creativity and excellent academic performance among those who want to complete their PhD in business administration at overseas graduate schools to foster world-class talents in business administration. Let's meet Lee Sun-hyuk, who was selected as a 中峰 Study Abroad Scholarship Students in 2022 and is going to the Finance PhD program of 'Georgia Institute of Technology - Scheller College of Business" to hear about the selection process and future plans. Q1. Hello, first of all, congratulations on being selected as a 中峰 Study Abroad Scholarship Student. Please introduce yourself. Hello, I'm Lee Sun-hyuk, a graduate of the Graduate School of Finance at Business Administration in August this year. I entered the Department of Global Business Administration in 2011 and completed a double degree in Indiana in 2014, and after completing my military service as a Bachelor of Air Force officer, I worked as a contractor/intern at a foreign bank and went on to my master's degree at this school. After entering the school, I was first selected as an excellent master's student at a business school, and it is very impressive to be selected as the first student of 中峰 Study Abroad Scholarship, which was newly established. Q2. You won the Dean of Student Success Award for excellent academic performance at this degree ceremony, and what activities did you win? I'm not sure if I did my studies well enough to receive the Student Success Award, but I think they appreciated the part I've been studying with interest in various fields in the master's course. After entering the master's program, I tried to learn machine learning methodology, which is a hot topic in business academia these days, by taking machine learning and deep learning classes provided by the Department of Artificial Intelligence Convergence, as well as taking challenging semester courses in addition to the graduate school classes for the Department of Business Administration in Financial major. With the advice of Professor Song Kyo-jik, who is an advisor, I applied the methodology to the master's thesis and analyzed Earnings Call Transcript Data of American companies and used variables that scored the innovative cultural level of companies in regression models. It was an opportunity to think about the actual financial research and machine learning methodology. In addition, I took/attended courses in economics and econometric economics, and I tried to acquire the basic skills and tools necessary for research, and I think you've seen my efforts in may ways. Q3. You must have participated in academic societies or various external activities when you were an undergraduate, what is the most memorable activity among the programs you participated in inside and outside the school? If I had to pick one of the most memorable activities, I worked at the Social Enterprise Network(SEN), a business administration society. During my freshman summer vacation, I read and discussed Columbia Business School's Entrepreneurship class materials at the SEN Internal Meeting Reading Group, and became interested in the model of pursuing corporate financial and social values together. I think it was a very important activity in my life that allowed me to expand my interest in corporate social responsibility(CSR) and social responsible investment(SRI). Of course, in addition to this academic interest, I think it was a good opportunity to build friendships with students from leading universities in Korea such as Yonsei University and Korea University due to the nature of the association, and to develop social skills by working in leadership positions. Furthermore, I remember this activity as a valuable experience and asset for me, such as obtaining information on internships, external activities, and being used as a great interview material in interviews. Q4. I heard that you also worked as an intern at UN Global Compact, BNP Paribas Seoul Branch Corporate Coverage Team, Mizuho Securities Asia. What did you do there? How has it helped you to select current scholarship students? In the summer of my sophomore year, I worked as an unpaid intern at the UN Global Compact Korea Network, which strives for corporate social responsibility(CSR) engagement, and basically translated data published by the New York headquarters to 200 association members at the time, making newsletters for domestic members and sending them every two weeks. In addition, I prepared a meeting event for then Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to meet with the CEOs of member companies in Korea, and participated in the overall process of planning and running the 1st youth CSR Conference. At the Seoul branch of BNP Paribas, I helped the relationship manager of the Corporate Coverage team, which serves as a contact point between the bank and the client, and partially performed the role of ARM(Associate Relationship Manager), which was vacant at the time. The most memorable thing is that I played the role of liason officer for various products needed by the financial team of large domestic companies such as Samsung Electronics and CJ CheilJedang, communicating with the financial staff of the client company, law firm, and product team in the bank, and carried out derivative contract renewal. In addition, I also routinely wrote and researched credit memos requested by other RM/ARM through ad-hoc, and performed various office assistance tasks such as binding client pitchbook and sending docuements. At Mizuho Securities Asia, he worked as a Summer intern in the Debt Capital Market team, and participated in the process of issuing Korean paper, a bond issued by large domestic companies in overseas currency. The most memorable deal was Lotte Corporation's Green Bond, which I applied to DCM because I wanted to experience the process of issuing green bonds from beginning to end, and it was a good experience to see what investors were interested in in the actual issuing market. First of all, doing the activities mentioned above, I think I was severely trained in communication in English in professional setting, and I think I was very helpful in interviewing and contacting professors in the application process for PhD beyond selecting scholarship students. Most of all, other people's advice was important when I was thinking about the direction of my career, but it was a good opportunity to directly feel the concerns about the actual work-life balance I felt while working and what values I would put first in my life. Q5. Why did you choose Georgia Institute of Technology? What do you want to study after entering the doctoral program? In fact, I received offers from about three schools, and among them, Georgia Tech had the best industrial engineering(ISYE) and computer program in the U.S. and the Business Finance program was closely interacting with these two departments, so I don't think I had much trouble choosing them. And I thought it was one of the great advantages of being able to cross-tune with Emory University or Georgia State University in Atlanta. In fact, I'm also attending Corporate Finance Theory Seminar at Emory this semester. Above all, the advisor of GAtech is here to give a lecture at SKKU AI Finance shop hosted by professor Song Kyo-jik in 2019. At that time, I first encountered the contact point between financial research and machine learning/computer science, and after that, I studied with interest, so I chose the school considering this connection. Of course, he was also a professor who actively researched such as CSR/ESG. First of all, we're trying to incorporate the Machine Learning/NLP methodology into our research, and we are planning to expand our interests to sustainable finance(ESG/Climate Finance), traditional corporate finance(M&A/IPO), as well as finance industry's digital transformation, etc. Currently, the department also operates NLP/Crypto-related reading groups, so we want to fully utilize the available resources and networks. Q6. Please tell me about your goal after you get your Ph.D. It's hard to say because it's too far away in the future, but in my short view, I'm making it my goal to become an assistant professor at one of the leading research-oriented schools in the United States. I want to be a researcher with good performance by consistently publishing papers in top-journals, but I also want to be a happy researcher/educator. I was shocked when I read a recnet article in Sisain called "The Swamp of Private Debt Starts Here," and I want to be a researcher who does research that can have a good influence on society regardless of position or institution. It's a cheeky idea, but I also want to play a small role in growing business students who will become leaders in the future industry into social workers with the right values. Everyone will have different opinions about what influence academia can have on society, in the financial academia, they believe that they can contribute to improving the market more efficiently and the system rationally through rigorous research results through active exchange and discussion with regulators and financial industry officials, and seem to take pride as researchers in such things. I don't know if my ability will allow it, but if I grow into an independent researcher through a PhD program, I want to use the knowledge and tools acquired in the process to contribute to the good of society and the public. Q7. Please give advice to students preparing for Sungkyunkwan University's graduate school to go to master's and doctor's. I'm sure those who are thinking about going to graduate school will think about many options such as overseas master's, self-schooling, and other schools. I did too. Each path clearly has its pros and cons, but I felt that the merit of self-schooling cannot be ignored compared to other options, and I think it was a really good choice even now. The scholarship system is really good compared to other majors and schools, and professors take good care of me like my family, so I would highly recommend those who want to enter overseas Ph.D. programs such as Sungkyunkwan University Business School, General Graduate School of Fintech Convergence. If you contact me personally at any time for methodological matters such as specific admission and sharing career-related tips, I will actively inform you as much as I can help you. Even if you don't go abroad for a doctorate, you can get guidance from professors with world-class research skills who publish papers in top journals with excellent programs at Sungkyunkwan University's Business School. In fact, looking at the cases of recent graduates, I think their status is increasing as they have been appointed as professors at leading universities in Korea and the United States, beating Ph.D.s from overseas universities. I heard that opportunities such as multiple degree programs and exchange research programs with U of SC are increasing. If you have any questions about methodology such as specific admission and sharing career-related tips, please contact me anytime and I will help you as much as I know. Q8. Last thing you want to say? First of all, I would like to express my great gratitude to Chairman Lee Hyu-koo for donating funds to select 中峰 Study Abroad Scholarship Student. In fact, prices have risen a lot in the U.S. due to inflation, and the exchange rate has risen a lot, so I was worried about studying abroad, but I think I can concentrate on studying and research without worrying about the economy. Once again, I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to Chairman Lee Hyun-koo. I hope that many juniors will continue to achieve great results and that the 中峰 Study Abroad Scholarship Student System will continue to grow and become established so that more researchers from Sungkyunkwan University can be produced in the business academia. I will do my best to grow into a good researcher and educator so that I can contribute to the development of Sungkyunkwan University's Business School. Thank you!

- Dr. Hwang Ji-hoe (Accounting major), an interview on the appointment of an accounting professor at Hannam University
- 1. Hello, it's so nice to meet you like this. Please introduce yourself to the field you are currently studying. Hello, I am Hwang Ji-hoe who was awarded a doctorate in accounting in February 2022. After graduating from the Department of Business Administration, I obtained a CPA certificate and joined Samil Accounting Corporation. After I joined company, I was mainly in charge of accounting audit, but I had an opportunity to conduct accounting training at large companies such as Samsung Electronics through the headquarters. I felt it was worth sharing my knowledge with people through education work, but I went to graduate school because I had a passion to develop myself further. The year 2018 when I started my Ph.D. program was the year when the accounting audit field change significantly due to the revision of the Act on External Audit of Stock Companies(hereinafter referred to as the External Audit Act). So I've been doing research with particular interest in the area of auditing. 2. I'm curious about the process of becoming a professor at Hannam University. Please explain the reason and process for applying. I always tried to be faithful to what I was responsible for, thinking that I could learn from it even if it was a small things. So, rather than setting a big goal during the PhD, I was faithful to the class during the course completion period, and after completion, I did my best to write a thesis with the students or under the guidance of the professor. As I tried to faithfully carry out the tasks given to me every moment, I was able to get the honor of receiving the President's award when I graduated. After I got my doctorate in February, I taught accounting principles and intermediate accounting at Sungkyunkwan University and Hanyang Women's University in the first semester, and now I'm going to teach students at Hannam University from the second semester. 3. If you have any research results or papers published in prestigious journals, please introduce them together. During my Ph.D. program, I published three papers in accounting research and business administration research, which are excellent places in the field of accounting and business administration in Korea. In particular, after being published in Accounting Research, 'The Effects of Newly Established Financial Standard Auditor Designation Reasons on Adjustment of Corporate Profits and Operating Cash Flows' published in Accounting Research in 2020, the Korean Institute of Certified Public Accountants was requested to contribute to Korea. It was also introduced in the January 2021 issue of the Monthly Certified Public Accountants published by the Society of Certified Public Accountants. In addition, my doctoral thesis, 'The Effect of the Auditee's Relative Importance on Auditing Partners on Audit Quality'(Guidance Professor : Lee Jong-eun) won an accounting degree thesis award organized by the Korea Accounting Association. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the professors as I think that I was able to receive this prestigious award thanks to my advisor, Professor Lee Jong-eun, the chairman of the review committee, Professor Baek Tae-young, and the professors on the thesis for giving me a lot of guidance and advice. 4. Please tell me about your future research plan. I am very interested in the study of the impact of the new regulations on society. My research published in the journal is also based on the revised external audit method, and I plan to continue to analyze the impact of the newly introduced system or standards related to accounting. If there are any deficiencies in the regulations in the process of conducting related research, I hope that the regulations will be useful for the purpose of introduction, such as providing supplementary measures, and that my research will be a small contribution to the development of accounting in a transparent direction. 5. Tell us about your ideal educator. I think the ideal educator is a student-centered education that helps students ask questions and find answers to themselves. I want to be a professor who constantly communicates with students so that they can play such a role as a helper. 6. Lastly, please give advice to Sungkyunkwan University students and master's and doctorate students preparing for the professor. There are negative news regarding the appointment of professors of due to a decrease in the school age population. When I read such articles and stories, I was worried about whether I should continue on this path. However, I think a good opportunity comes to everyone even in difficult situations. And I think you need to build up your skills so that you can catch the chance. In the process of preparing for the appointment, I was helped by my advisor and other professors. When it is difficult to solve alone, you can get unexpected answers or be offered a new direction if you actively ask for help from professors. And I think fellowship is more important than anything else in school life. I was able to have a good time physically and mentally because I also had a good motivation and senior who helped each other and helped each other. If you have a colleague who can discuss topics of interest together, do research together by filling in the deficiencies of each other, eat and joke together, and enjoy your daily life at school, your school life and research results will be rich.
