- Wang Hanning (Management 22) from Taiwan's Sungkyunkwan University Life STORY NEW
- Wang Hanning (management 22) from Taiwan has the goal of interning before graduation. To this goal, she, who was attending the freshman year at the time, boldly challenged herself even though she was a freshman and gained experience in several interviews. Let's listen to her story with such an enterprising and positive energy. ▣ Please introduce me to your hometown. Taiwan is the southern island of Korea in East Asia. Many of you may not know, but the country invented bubble tea, which Koreans love. My hometown is in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan. Taipei is one of the favorite destinations for Koreans to visit. It is the capital, but the atmosphere is not that different from Seoul. In terms of traffic, Taipei is not big, so the travel distance is not long. Motorcycles may be a convenient option for short distances. Sometimes the number of motorcycles on the road is more than cars. It does not snow in Taipei in the winter. If you want to see snow in the winter, you must take a car at a certain time to climb up the mountain to see at least a little snow. It was the first time I felt the romantic winter atmosphere of snow in Seoul. ▣ What made you come to Korea? When I was in my second year of high school, I considered studying in Korea. I became interested in K-pop, so I started learning Korean. After that, as I studied in person, I became more interested in Korean. While I was learning a second language, I also found motivation for studying, and I believed that I would be able to do this job well. I decided to study in Korea based on this belief, so I wanted to live an active and positive life in Korea. ▣ What made you major in business administration? Originally, I was very interested in the business administration department and the media department. Eventually, I chose the business administration department because of the system of the Korean university. In Taiwan, the departments are further subdivided into accounting and corporate management, but I didn't know which one to choose because I had no experience in those majors. Business administration departments in Korea can learn various fields at once, such as corporate management, marketing, and accounting, so this diversity has come to me attractively. I chose business administration and acquired many interesting majors while living in college. I think that choice really suits me. ▣ What did you like about your school life in Korea? As an international student in Korea, I think I can have various experiences. Especially, I think it is a valuable experience to be able to make friends from other countries at school. Our school's foreign support team is happy to have prepared a variety of activities for international students. It is a valuable experience to be able to meet international student friends who are from different countries but have the same dreams. It is also a fascinating and special experience that local friends greet me every time I travel abroad. I don't think I can feel these experiences when I'm in my hometown. At school, there is an activity called "Global Buddy" that matches Korean students in the first grade, and through that activity, I was able to make friends that I have kept in touch with until now. As an international student at Sungkyunkwan University, I think I'm lucky to be able to use these various applications. ▣ On the contrary, what was difficult about you? I've been very smooth these two years. I didn't have any major problems, but what I'm worried about every time is registering for classes. Most universities in Taiwan apply by lottery, and Sungkyunkwan University applies on a first-come, first-served basis, just like booking a concert ticket. So, the timetable I set every time was completely broken on the day of registration. In my four semesters of history, I have never succeeded on the timetable I wanted. What was particularly impressive was that I was enjoying my vacation on the day of registration. The local Internet was not good and there was no PC room. I had no choice but to register for the course on my cell phone, but as everyone expected, I succeeded in registering for only one course. At that time, I was busy for a week. Fortunately, however, I succeeded in applying for the desired course in the second round of registration. The Korean university's course registration system is scary and painful, but somehow it worked out. ▣ Have you ever traveled in Korea? If you have, tell me your story. I have been to Busan, Jeju Island, Suwon, Chuncheon, Sokcho, and Gapyeong. The most impressive place was my trip to Suwon. The two-day trip to Suwon was the first one in Korea. At that time, I had been in Korea less than a month, and I had no close friends. I went to Suwon Hwaseong by myself with my backpack during the Chuseok holiday. The reason I chose Suwon was because I love historical buildings, and I booked train tickets as soon as I saw pictures of Hwaseong. I spent the afternoon by myself at a Hanok Cafe, and since then, I kept walking along the road along the fortress to Seojangdae to see the sunset and night view. It was nice to be able to enjoy my own trip after a long time. That's how Suwon became a city where I could recharge my energy. If I go back there when I feel confused, I can regain my originality. So that trip became an impressive trip for me. ▣ Please introduce me to your favorite hometown food. My favorite home food these days is Taiwanese-style hot pot. Many people might think of hot pot divided into white soup and spicy fish stew, like Haidirao, a hot pot franchise that has stores in Korea, but I think hot pot, which is sold for about 6,000 won per person, seems to be common in Taiwan. It's a way to fill one pot with one type of soup and sell it with lots of vegetables and hot pot ingredients. This is my favorite style of hot pot. I like that it's cost-effective and well-balanced nutrition, so I can drink the hot pot that I like. Taiwanese-style hot pot is my favorite hangover menu. - 2023 SKKU Teaching Award Winner Interview_Professor Oh Jong-min
-
Q1. Hello. Professor, congratulations on being selected for the 2023 SKKU Teaching Award. Please share your thoughts. Hello, thank you for your congratulations. It has been four years since I took up my position at Sungkyunkwan University. There have been many difficulties in the meantime, such as conducting fully online classes due to COVID-19, but I think I have come this far safely thanks to the support of the school, the help of fellow professors, and the cooperation of students. Recently, I have been reflecting on what I can do to improve my teaching, and while I am very honored to receive the SKKU Teaching Award, I also feel a great sense of responsibility. In the future, I will put more thought and effort into providing greater inspiration and resonance to students beyond simply conveying knowledge. Thank you. Q2. I'm curious about the ongoing research. Or please introduce the areas you are interested in. I have mainly conducted research on corporate finance, and my main area of interest is the relationship between corporate value and investment in various intangible assets of companies, such as ESG, technological innovation, and corporate culture. I am currently working hard to discover interesting research topics such as the relationship between ESG and the global supply chain. Q3. What is the secret to winning the 2023 SKKU Teaching Award this time? Rather than having a special secret, I think the fact that I tried to communicate smoothly with students worked well. For example, my policy of responding to student e-mail inquiries within 24 hours has been followed with almost no exceptions. I have been continuously conducting face-to-face consultations and counseling through Zoom when requested. It seems that students feel secure just by the fact that the channel of communication with the professor is always open. I think this had the effect of increasing overall satisfaction with the class. Q4. Was there an episode that impressed you the most during your professor’s class? I conducted a kind of experiment because I wanted to conduct a new type of class for first graders. It was about information asymmetry, and students were asked to auction items that were packaged invisibly. I was worried about what would happen if participation was low, but the bid price rose faster than I expected and quickly rose to a higher price than I expected. In the end, wireless headphones worth 180,000 won in the box were sold at a higher price than I expected, so I remember being a little embarrassed. In the second auction, which was held after the identity of the first item was revealed, there were a lot of bubbles as intended, and a 3,500 won note was sold for a whopping 500,000 won (both people received the product as a gift without paying any money). I think the concept was communicated effectively and the students responded well, so I hope to create more unique learning opportunities in the future. Q5. What are your future research plans? As I mentioned earlier, I have focused on researching the impact of investment in intangible assets such as corporate social responsibility, ESG, innovative technology and its intellectual property rights, and corporate culture on corporate value. In the 21st century, the proportion of intangible assets rather than tangible assets in a company's total assets is gradually increasing worldwide, and this trend is expected to intensify in the future. Therefore, it was judged that research on investment in intangible assets of companies and changes in corporate value accordingly is important, and I will continue to research related fields. Q6. Lastly, please give a word to business school students. I think I was able to receive the prestigious Teaching Award thanks to the students who worked hard and created good classes together. I am also carefully reading each and every honest and witty course evaluation feedback. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the students. In addition to academic studies, our students are very busy studying for certifications and preparing for employment. In the meantime, I hope that they will not miss out on the various experiences that can only be enjoyed within the walls of the university. Thank you -

- SKKU Teaching Award_Interview with Professor Kim Yong-seok
- The SKKU Teaching Award system is an honorable award that selects and rewards teachers and instructors who have led the way in improving the quality of education at our university. Since its first implementation in 2011, a total of 93 people have been selected until last year, and it provides pride and recognition to teachers and instructors with outstanding teaching capabilities. The purpose is to provide honor and promote and spread motivation to provide quality education. We listened to the story of Professor Kim Yong-seok(majoring in management information), the winner of the 2023 SKKU Teaching Award. Q1. Hello. Professor, congratulations on being selected for the 2023 SKKU Teaching Award. Please share your thoughts. I am pleased to present such an honorable award. I am also humbled by the fact that there are many fellow professors who teach students with respect and passion. I think of this award as an encouragement to teach students better in the future, and I will think more and work hard to provide good lectures. thank you Q2. What is the secret to winning the 2023 SKKU Teaching Award this time? It is difficult for me to say for sure what the secret is. What students often mention is that I teach with passion and that I use a lot of real-life examples to explain things in an easy-to-understand manner. I had a chance to see the reasons for selection when awarding an award. It appears that several factors were taken into consideration, including course evaluation scores, efforts to improve the curriculum (education committee activities and participation in the Education Development Center workshop, etc.), and contributions to expanding global education in business schools (providing international language classes and actively accepting exchange students). This is an activity that everyone is doing, and I think I was lucky. Q3. Was there an episode that impressed you the most during your class? About half of the students taking my classes are exchange students, so their nationalities are diverse. I conduct a variety of group activities so that Sungkyunkwan University students have the opportunity to collaborate with students from various countries. On the day of the first group activity, which was full of awkwardness, we asked students to bring a snack to introduce their country to as an icebreaker, and the students loved it. I was happy to see them all smiling and becoming friends so quickly. Q4. I am curious about what research is currently underway and what research will be conducted in the future. Among the research currently in progress, I would like to mention research related to crowdfunding. Crowdfunding refers to the act of an entrepreneur with a business item introducing his or her project through an Internet platform and raising business funds from a large number of small investors. Much research is being conducted to understand investor decision-making and the success of crowdfunding campaigns in attracting investment. The research I am conducting is about how the investment decisions of 1) celebrities with many followers on social networks and 2) experts with a lot of relevant investment experience influence the decisions of other investors, and how this impact varies depending on the degree of difficulty in evaluating the quality of business items (experience goods vs. exploration goods). We collected and analyzed a large amount of data from Wadiz, a Korean crowdfunding platform, and are currently finalizing our thesis. Additionally, we have begun research examining the impact of generative artificial intelligence on team collaboration. Within a company, TFTs or project teams are often formed for business planning, product development, problem solving, etc. At this time, the dominant research results are that teams made up of members with diverse backgrounds and perspectives tend to generate more creative and innovative ideas, but also have difficulty coordinating and integrating opinions. These days, companies are very interested in whether the use of generative artificial intelligence will lead to increased work productivity. Therefore, when generative artificial intelligence is introduced into team work, we would like to investigate through experiments the pros and cons of team diversity and how they interact, and present theoretical and practical implications. Q5. Lastly, please give a word to business school students. Many professors often worry and share opinions about how to provide better lectures. There is a saying that YouTubers always say: “Your ‘subscriptions’ and ‘likes’ are a great help in video production.” Likewise, students' interest and affection for their subjects is a great help to instructors and motivates them to prepare better lectures. No matter what course you take, we ask for your active class participation and interest!
